Cultural appropriation is when elements of one culture—such as clothing, language, symbols, or traditions—are taken and used by members of another culture, often without understanding or respect for their original meaning. It is especially controversial when members of a dominant or historically oppressive culture adopt aspects of a marginalized culture in a way that distorts, exploits, or commodifies them. Attending our event you will learn what is appropriate even for fantasy dress-up garbs or cosplay.
When Is It Appropriate?
Cultural exchange can be respectful and appropriate when:
1. There Is Mutual Understanding and Respect – Learning from and honoring another culture (rather than taking elements for fashion or entertainment) is key.
2. Permission and Participation Are Involved – If members of a culture share their traditions willingly, and you engage with them in a way that honors their meaning, it is less likely to be appropriation.
3. It Avoids Stereotyping or Commercialization – Using cultural elements in a way that perpetuates stereotypes or profits off a culture without benefiting its people is problematic.
4. Context Matters – Some cultural symbols and practices have deep spiritual or historical significance (e.g., Indigenous headdresses, religious attire). Using them casually or outside their intended context can be offensive.
A good rule of thumb is to ask: “Am I appreciating or appropriating?” If you’re engaging with another culture in a way that is informed, respectful, and does not exploit or misrepresent it, it is more likely to be appropriate.
Diversity
as a Fantasy event, we are driven to be a Culture- Mythology focus event. Where we not only focus centering POC but that includes APPI, Latin Diaspora, and everyone within the term of BIPOC. Lets not forget our multi-racial individual friends too. Everyone has a voice, identity and self expression we want to spotlight here at our event. Regardless of their orientation, or gender identity.
RealmScape Festival is a family-friendly event that celebrates diversity, creativity, and inclusion, much like other cultural festivals! It features music, storytelling, crafts, and entertainment suitable for all ages, making it a welcoming space for families and children. Not to forget child at heart adults!
You or your child does not have to "be" anything in order to attend the festivities!
The Benefit of bringing your Faelings or Guppies!
it will teach kids to be open-minded from an early age. They will grow into kind and accepting individuals. When diversity is normalized, children learn respect, empathy, and inclusivity, which leads to a more compassionate society!
"But it says LGBTQIA+.."
For those who may be skeptical or hold misconceptions, it’s important to clarify that RealmScape Festival does not teach or present LGBTQIA culture as a practice to children. It is NOT about pushing an agenda, exposing sexualizing behavior, or forcing beliefs on anyone! Instead, it is a safe, fun, and celebratory space where all people are welcome, regardless of their background or identity.
"So, this is not like a PRIDE event?"
RealmScape Festival is a fantasy-themed event focused on magic, storytelling, and dressing up, much like a Renaissance fair or a comic convention. The heart of the festival is creativity and adventure, where people of all ages can immerse themselves in a world of imagination. Unlike a Pride event, which centers on LGBTQIA identity, activism, and advocacy, RealmScape is not about promoting any specific culture or movement but instead fostering a space where everyone feels seen and included.
Equality
Our focus is on, being open-minded through storytelling, ensuring that underrepresented communities—such as BIPOC and LGBTQIA individuals—are represented and celebrated. As marginalized people ourselves, we know the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels valued and welcome. RealmScape is not about pushing beliefs but about embracing diversity in fantasy and making sure everyone has a place in any story.
Misgendering can happen anywhere, at any time or from anyone. It is important to know, we are far from imperfect just like our patrons. However, at our event we have a strong sense of advocating for everyone's needs. We encourage all trans or nonbinary friends to be encouraging to each other to their preference of identity by offering a bit of patience to those not familiar. Such as children, or heterosexuals that attend as allies to our festive cause. We are a inclusive space that invites a wide range of demographics that want to experience and educate themselves that caters to their interest due to the resources we offer at our event!
What is Misgendering?
This can occur when someone is referred to using pronouns, names, or terms that do not align with their self-identified gender. This misalignment can cause emotional distress and may intensify feelings of gender dysphoria—the discomfort that arises when one’s internal sense of gender does not match the sex assigned at birth.
What is Gender Dysphoria?
Gender dysphoria is when someone feels upset because their body doesn’t match who they feel they are inside. It can make them sad or uncomfortable, and some people change their name, clothes, or even their body to feel better.
How To Avoid Distress
To avoid triggering gender dysphoria, respect a person’s identity by using their correct name and pronouns. Avoid commenting on their body or past gender. Support their choices in clothing, voice, and presentation. If unsure, ask what makes them comfortable and follow their lead.
Example, " What are your choice of pronouns?" will reflect more positively.
Never ask for example," Are you a boy or girl?" !
At our event, we are dedicated to creating a supportive, inclusive, and uplifting environment for our community and the working staff. We are always working towards how to make the environment better in a mutual beneficial inclusive way. Here’s how we ensure our space remains therapeutic, educational and empowering:
• Empowering Authenticity:
We invite all attendees and staff to share their identities openly—whether by wearing pronoun pins or including pronouns during introductions. This practice helps everyone communicate respectfully and clearly, fostering an atmosphere where authenticity is celebrated.
• Kindness in Correction:
Recognizing that mistakes can happen, our approach emphasizes gentle, respectful reminders rather than degrading or policing. If misgendering occurs, a brief apology and correction are encouraged so that everyone feels supported and valued without fear of judgment.
• Mutual Growth and Learning:
Our community thrives on open-mindedness. We view every interaction as an opportunity to learn and grow together. Respectful reminders are welcomed as a way to reinforce our commitment to inclusivity and understanding.
By embracing these principles, our event becomes more than just a gathering—it becomes a space where each individual is empowered to be their true self. Our dedicated working staff and community members are at the heart of this commitment, ensuring that our environment remains a beacon of respect, empathy, and continuous personal and collective growth!
